The seven archangels

The seven Archangels are mentioned in The Book of Tobit, also known as the Book of Tobias or the Book of Tobi, a 3rd or early 2nd century BC Jewish work describing how God tests the faithful, responds to prayers, and protects the covenant community.
The archangels are the messengers of great and wondrous tidings and reveal prophecies and the mysteries of the faith. They enlighten people to know and understand the will of God and spread faith in God among the people, illuminating their minds with the light of the Holy Gospel.
Archangels are one of many Ranks of Heavenly Powers (Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Authorities, Principalities, Archangels and Angels) all of which are called angels, although each has its own name and position by virtue of their service. The Lord reveals His will to the highest ranks of the angels, and they in turn inform the others.
It is said each person has a guardian angel, and every nation also receives its own guardian angel from God, also when a church is consecrated, it also receives a guardian angel.
In the catholic tradition only three of the seven archangels are normally referenced, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, in the orthodox religion sometimes an eighth angel is also venerated, Jerahmeel or Jeremiel. Jeremiel was said to be responsible for placating the righteous souls awaiting the Lord who resided in the underworld is sometimes paired with St. Simon Peter as gatekeeper of Heaven. Jeremiel watches over and guides the holy deceased in their afterlife journey and is often depicted with balance scales.
Other sources list other angels such as Israfel, Azrael (angel of death), Azriel, Chamuel, Ridwan, Maalik, Munkar, Nakir, Kiraman, and Katibin in the muslim faith. Raguel, Sariel, Yerachmiel, Yehudiel, Jophiel (angel of Joy and Beauty), Zadkiel (angel of freedom), Saraqael, Simiel, Oriphiell, Cecitie, Camael (the peacekeeper), Marmoniel, Sealtiel, Suriel, Zachariel, Zadakiel, Remiel, Samael, and Sarathiel.
