The sacred Buddhist texts which form the doctrinal foundation of Theravada Buddhism comprise the teachings of Buddha, known collectively as Dharma. Broken down into three sections, each part of the Tripitaka carries the name pitaka, or basket, hence the westernized term, the Three Baskets.
Another name for the three tripitaka is the Pali Canon.

The Pali Tripitaka

01. Sutta Pitaka. (Discourses).

This contains discourses or sermons ascribed to Gautama Buddha, it is also called the Discourse Basket and is believed to be a written collection of teachings of Buddha. Included in this basket is Dhammapada, or the exposition of law according to the Buddha.

02. Vinaya Pitaka. (Discipline or training).

This contains in its pages, disciplinary rules for the Buddhist monks and nuns, and members of the Buddhist congregation (called the Sangha), as well as explanations of why and how these rules were instituted, with supporting material, and doctrinal clarification.

03. Abhidhamma Pitaka. (Metaphysics or philosophy).

Sometimes called the philosophy basket. This contains material often described as systematic expositions of the Gautama Buddha’s teachings. These teachings contain theories and descriptions of reality.
