The Five Fetters

Progress on the path to liberation can be seen through the ten hindrances (five lower plus five higher fetters) to enlightenment and our destruction of them as fetters.
The five lower fetters can be found in the Saṃyukta Nikāya/Samyutta Nikaya which is is a Buddhist scripture, the third of the five nikayas, or collections, in the Sutta Pitaka, which is one of the three baskets that compose the Pali Tipitaka of Theravada.

The Five Lower Fetters

01. Identity view, or the belief in a permanent personality, ego (Anatman). (Sakkāya-diṭṭhi)

Various levels of abandonment or eradication of this fetter of the ego make one a stream enterer or once returner.

02. Doubt in or scepticism of Buddha nature. (Vicikicchā).

A mind clear of afflictions (Klesha) is inherently present in us all, this is Buddha nature, is is eternal and unchanging. It will shine forth when it is cleansed of the defilements. Once you appreciate this at some level you are a stream enterer or a once returner.

03. Attachment to ascetic rites, ritual rules, and ceremonies. (Sīlabbata-parāmāso).

Stream enterer and once returners are at various levels of abandonment or eradication with this fetter.

04. Sensual desire/attachment to sense desires. (Kāmacchando)

Non-returners have abandoned or eradicated this fetter.

05. Ill will or anger. (Vyāpādo or byāpādo)

Non-returners have abandoned or eradicated this fetter.
